Timing Belt & Chain Replacement

A timing belt or cam-belt as sometimes known is tasked with keeping the top half of your engine (valves) synchronised with the lower half of your engine (pistons), this is often known as “timing” In the event of timing belt failure valve to piston contact will occur and can cause costly damage.

Your vehicle manufacture will give a recommended interval for replacing the timing belt this is usually a set mileage and age an example might be 120k or 60 months, but this will vary from manufactures and even models. Its important you know when this interval is and have the timing belt changed.

Some timing belts also drive the water-pump should the water-pump fail it can cause damage to the timing belt resulting in premature failure, for this reason it is often advised to change the water-pump guides and tensioners often referred to as a kit during the timing belt replacement.

Some engines use a timing chain instead of a timing belt although the principles are the same they often don’t come with a recommended replacement interval from the manufacture. Timing chains are generally designed to last longer than belts but poor servicing and design flaws can cause timing chains to fail like belts do, for this reason it is wise to enquire about any known issues with timing chain failures on your make and model and replace them to save costly repairs.
